Big Game Fishing
The sport of big game fishing is known to have begun in 1898 and a gentleman by the name of Dr. Charles Frederick Holder is credited with having virtually invented it as a sport. He went on to publish many books about big game fishing.
The sport grew off the back of the increased popularity of motorised boats and as these boats have become larger and faster the sport has expanded accordingly. Initially big game fishing was limited to areas where there were large numbers of appropriate fish within range of the local boats. However, these days the boats can travel larger distances meaning the sport fishing industry has now gone global.
Australia is particularly well known in world angling circles as having one of the best land-based big game fishing locations. The rocky outcrops of Jervis Bay in New South Wales is the most famous locations in the world and black marlin of up to 200 lbs have been caught by big game fishermen using balloons to float their baits out into the deep waters.
The United States is where big game fishing began and is still considered the world capital of the sport. Along the east coast in particular (from Key West to the Gulf of Maine) big game fishing is hugely popular.
The east coast is known for great sport-fishing of species such as bluefin tuna, dolphinfish, broadbill swordfish, sailfish and the legendary striped marlin.
